Our Youth

Children's Time

The Youth at First United attend Sunday school and benefit from Children’s Church during the Sunday morning worship service. The youth participate in the worship services, fellowship suppers, picnics, and music ministry of the church. Lakeshore offers Christian camping experiences during the summer.

Reelfoot Rural Ministries

In February 1963 Mrs. Perry Butler and Mrs. Wesley McKinnie started on a dream toward improving the lives of underprivileged rural children.  Their first act was to establish a Sunday School in a long-unused Methodist Church at Mooring.  Efforts were begun to secure a deaconess who could develop this project, but it was not until September 1965 that Miss Pauline Precise was secured for this task.

Nine years later this dream became a reality with the dedication of a $100,000 building made possible by a five-acre gift of land from Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Maloney of Hornbeak and by the financial backing of the Methodist conference, the Methodist conference WSCS and Mr. Hyde and his daughter, Mrs. Jane Scott of Memphis.  The project is now known and supported, far and wide, as Reelfoot Rural Ministries.

First United Methodist Church actively supports the mission of Reelfoot Rural ministries.  Their mission is to provide personal encouragement, material assistance, helpful training and spiritual guidance to children, the elderly, and low-income families in rural Northwest Tennessee and Southwest Kentucky, in a manner that enhances self-esteem and encourages self-support.  First Church participates in RRM’s annual toy and  food drive; sends volunteers to help when the need arises; gives ongoing financial assistance through an annual district offering and special appeals.

Our Fellowship

A special time of fellowship and sharing comes on the first Wednesday evening each of the fall, winter, and spring months when First United and Crockett Chapel jointly hold pot luck suppers as a time of fellowship and sharing and special programs. Members also enjoy a family picnic and ice cream social during the summer.  The churches also join together to hold special spiritual growth events.

Music Ministry

The Music Ministry of First United Methodist Church opens its arms to all voices. One special blessing to the music of the church is the large, pipe organ. The choir provides music as a part of  Sunday worship services and special holidays and events.
